Safety recalls for a make/model/year — Transport Canada + NHTSA, never merged

Open safety recalls from both jurisdictions. Transport Canada is authoritative for a Canadian vehicle; NHTSA is supplementary US context and is genuinely complementary — measured, a 2021 RAV4 has 5 Transport Canada campaigns against 1 at NHTSA, while a 2019 Ram 1500 has 21 against 30. Neither source is a superset of the other.

Matching is model-level, not VIN-level. Transport Canada publishes no VIN-level recall lookup, so nobody in Canada can say whether a specific VIN has an open recall without the manufacturer's own portal. An open recall listed here may already have been remedied on that particular vehicle.

Campaigns are linked, never merged. Where the same manufacturer campaign appears in both registers, each record carries linked_to with a match_confidence of exact or probable. Rows are never collapsed: a false merge would hide a safety notice, while a duplicate merely looks untidy.

Query parameters

makestring required

Vehicle make, e.g. Honda.

modelstring

Vehicle model. Omit to get every recall for the make.

yearinteger

Model year.

source'canada' | 'us'

Limit to one register.

matchstring

Comma-separated match tiers to include; defaults to all three. exact — the model names agree. family — our model name is more specific than theirs ("Sierra 1500" against their "SIERRA"), so their campaign covers this vehicle. variant — theirs is more specific than ours ("RX" against "RX350"), so the campaign may cover only that variant. Every returned recall reports the tier it matched on.

Response

recalls[] with jurisdiction, campaign number, date, affected system, description and linked_to; counts by jurisdiction; match including the tiers present and the VIN-level caveat; coverage stating whether NHTSA has been indexed for this vehicle yet — not_yet_indexed is reported honestly rather than as a zero.
