Convert smart typographic characters to ASCII equivalents

Replaces curly quotes, em/en dashes, ellipsis, non-breaking and other exotic spaces with ASCII equivalents. Removes zero-width characters and byte-order marks. Useful before feeding text to downstream parsers that assume plain ASCII.
