Strips Markdown syntax: headings, bold/italic/strikethrough, inline code, fenced code blocks (optional preserve), links (keep anchor text), images (keep alt), blockquote markers, horizontal rules; list markers are normalized to '- ' bullets, not stripped. For readability scoring, PII detection, and downstream parsers that expect plaintext.
