Serve thumbnail (max 768px)

With w, a lossy JPEG rendition of the thumbnail at most w px wide instead (never upscaled), or the stored thumbnail where none is stored for that width: a rendition no lighter than the thumbnail is never kept, and an AI-generated image is never re-encoded.
