2026-09-02 — was hard-gated behind verify_clerk_token even though the only genuinely personal thing this returns is the already_joined flag on activities (Pulse Stitch brief: "public Activity/movement context" should be guest-browsable). Switched to optional auth: a guest gets user_id=None (already_joined defaults to false via the LEFT JOIN's NULL-uid match, which matches no rows — correct, not a guess) and no profile-location fallback (no profile to fall back to); they can still pass real lat/lon query params, or see the honest "nothing nearby" empty state instead of the previous 401 the frontend surfaced as a scary "Couldn't load nearby routes" error.
