US Statutes

Coverage matrix by jurisdiction and corpusType

Self-describing coverage matrix. Returns a legend of every corpusType token (what it contains and whether it is federal or state-scoped) plus, for each jurisdiction, the per-corpusType ingested DOCUMENT counts in corpora (one per section or document, not per retrieval passage; totalPassages in the same response IS the passage count). Use it to learn exactly what is queryable where before calling /us/statutes/search: read a jurisdiction's corpora keys, then pass one as corpusType (paired with state for state-scoped corpora). Each legend entry's browsable says whether GET /us/statutes/divisions can also walk that corpus as a tree.

A corpusType absent from a jurisdiction's corpora means no documents of that type are held for it yet. Counts show what is held, and differ by corpus because jurisdictions publish at different volumes. Attorney general opinions, register notices and statute compilations return goodLawStatus: unknown by design, and annual editions return not_good_law because a later edition supersedes them. Congressional bills (introduced, pending or enrolled, with their status) are not held; enacted federal text is under SESSION_LAW and USC. A bill corpus is planned as an opt-in token, FEDERAL_BILL (proposed text, never law, outside every total); it is registered and returns nothing today, and proposedCorpora reports its count.

Territories. Beyond the 50 states and DC, five territories are jurisdictions of their own, each with kind: territory: Puerto Rico (pr), Guam (gu), the U.S. Virgin Islands (vi), American Samoa (as) and the Northern Mariana Islands (mp). All five hold statutes, regulations and court rules. Constitutions (STATE_CONSTITUTION) are held for pr, as and mp and not for gu or vi. Attorney general opinions (STATE_AG_OPINION) are held for pr and DC only, and a register (STATE_REGISTER) for mp. Puerto Rico statutes are held in Spanish, as enacted, and resolve by their L.P.R.A. number where that number is printed on the section; the LexisNexis annotated edition (English translation, annotations, index) is not held. The jurisdiction's own corpora keys are the authoritative list, and a corpusType missing from them is not held.

It reports what we hold, not how recently it was refreshed. For the age of any source, call GET /boards: it is free, needs no credits, and carries lastRetrievedAt and cadence for every tracked source. Read it alongside the counts here so a section count carries an age. It records when we last CHECKED, not when the law last changed, and it is not a claim that the law is current as of that date. Where a publisher states its own currency, that rides on each section as currentThrough.

Point-in-time (asOf) coverage of the US Code is partial. USC holds the current text of every section. A prior print (the 2024 edition) is held only for the small set of sections that the move to the Office of the Law Revision Counsel's release points retired, and prior release points are not ingested. For any other section a past date is answered from our change capture and flagged isBounded: true: we observed no change affecting that date, which is not the same as holding the edition then in force. A date between two prints we hold is reported out of coverage rather than answered from a neighbour.

Free. Requires an API key and is rate-limited, but costs no credits.

State session laws (acts as enacted) are at /us/session-laws. Where we hold any for a jurisdiction, its sessionLaws block says which sessions are complete or partial, how many laws we serve, how many we withhold (withheldCount: in our registry, text not shown, each with a stated reason), the expected total and open gaps, and the series, instrumentTypes and approval-date span that exist (the values GET /us/session-laws/list accepts). A jurisdiction we hold no session laws for has no block. Which jurisdictions have one changes as we collect more, so read it here and do not assume it from a list. This is the one place session-law coverage is served: check it before you list, then read the laws at /us/session-laws.

Return only this jurisdiction: a 2-letter US state code (one of the 56 supported) or federal. Case-insensitive. Omit for every jurisdiction. The unfiltered matrix runs to about a megabyte, so pass this when you are asking about one place. totalSections and stateCountWithData stay corpus-wide.
