Avatar travels as a pointer so an omitted field can be told apart from an explicit clear: nil keeps the stored avatar, a pointer to "" wipes it. As a plain string the two cases were indistinguishable, so a caller that PUT only a config silently zeroed the avatar and still got a 200.
