ISO

Multi-year ISO exercise schedule optimization

Returns a multi-year Incentive Stock Option (ISO) exercise schedule that maximizes after-tax Net Final Value (NFV) while minimizing federal and state Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) across the horizon, accounting for AMT credit recovery in later years, qualifying-disposition timing, grant expiration, and the post-termination exercise window. The optimizer searches its full discretized candidate space and refines the result share by share, matching a brute-force maximum to the cent on the published tractable case. Its post-termination partial-exercise figure is scanned, so it can land a few shares off the exact optimum. Timing fields are measured from the current date.

Request body

sharesinteger required

Total ISO shares to exercise across the horizon.

strikenumber required

Strike price per share, USD.

fmvnumber required

Fair market value per share today (year 1).

tickerstring

Optional public-stock symbol (e.g. "NVDA"). When set, the API substitutes the ticker's trailing CAGR for any unsupplied expected-return / sale-price field instead of requiring the caller to invent one. ~90 symbols covered; unknown tickers fall through to 'required field' 400 errors.

volatilityDragnumber

Multiplicative haircut at the planning horizon. Either this OR volatility is required; if both are supplied, volatilityDrag wins.

volatilitynumber

Annualized volatility (sigma) of the stock. Either this OR volatilityDrag is required; if both are supplied, volatilityDrag wins. Derived drag = 1 - exp(-(sigma^2 / 2) * horizon).

filingStatus'single' | 'married_joint' | 'head_household' required

United States federal filing status.

ordinaryIncomenumber required

Annual ordinary income excluding the exercise. Taxable income after deductions, not gross wages: regular tax is figured on it as given. For the AMT the calculation adds the standard deduction back (Form 6251, line 2a), unless itemizedTaxes is given, in which case it adds back those taxes instead.

itemizedTaxesnumber

Only if you itemize deductions: the state and local taxes deducted on Schedule A, line 7. The AMT adds these back instead of the standard deduction. Omit if you take the standard deduction. When omitted, the AMT add-back defaults to the full standard deduction.

stateCodestring required

Two-letter United States state code (e.g. CA, NY, TX).

carryforwardCreditnumber

Existing federal AMT credit from prior years. Optional; defaults to 0 (most first-time exercisers have none).

horizoninteger required

Planning horizon in years.

cashReturnRatenumber

Annual after-tax return on idle cash, used to time-value AMT premiums. Optional; defaults to 0.04 when omitted.

grantDatestring date required

ISO 8601 date string (YYYY-MM-DD).

hasLeftCompanyboolean required
terminationDatestring date

ISO 8601 date string (YYYY-MM-DD).

Response

Successful amt_iso_optimize result.
