location-timezone

Resolve IANA timezone from coordinates

Return the IANA timezone for the provided coordinates.

If no timezone can be confidently determined (e.g., mid-ocean or invalid inputs), the endpoint falls back to UTC and marks fallback=true. The underlying lookup is cached within the core tools.

X-OpenEphemeris-API-Keystring nullable
apikeystring nullable

Request body

latitudenumber required

Latitude in decimal degrees

longitudenumber required

Longitude in decimal degrees

{
  "latitude": 37.7749,
  "longitude": -122.4194
}

Response

Successful Response

fallbackboolean

True when a generic/UTC fallback was used

latitudenumber required

Echoed latitude input

longitudenumber required

Echoed longitude input

near_boundaryboolean

True when the resolver returns a different IANA zone within ~25 km of the coordinate — Indiana county patchwork, El Paso, zone-split states. A point lookup this close to a boundary is one polygon edge from a whole-hour error; display the resolved offset with extra prominence and confirm with the user.

neighboring_zonesstring[]

When near_boundary is true: the other IANA zone(s) resolved within ~25 km, nearest first.

timezonestring required

Resolved IANA timezone name (e.g., 'America/Los_Angeles')
