Delete a APNs certificate

⚠️ iOS/iPadOS/tvOS only.

Deletes an APNs certificate record from the Esper tenant by its ID.

Once deleted, Esper can no longer send push notifications to iOS devices provisioned under that certificate; devices will lose MDM connectivity until a new certificate is uploaded and enrolled.

About Delete APNs Certificate

APNs (Apple Push Notification service) certificates are required for all iOS MDM communication between Esper and Apple-managed devices. Deleting a certificate invalidates the Esper-side record; however, the corresponding certificate entry in the Apple Push Certificates Portal is unaffected and must be managed separately. This operation is irreversible — if you need to re-establish iOS MDM for the tenant, you must create a new APNs certificate from scratch. Only tenants with iOS provisioning enabled will have APNs certificate records.

Best Practices

Ensure all affected iOS devices have been unenrolled or migrated before deleting a certificate, as deletion immediately breaks MDM connectivity for those devices.

Use a dedicated service account Apple ID for APNs certificates so that ownership is not tied to an individual who may leave the organization.

Before deleting, retrieve the certificate details via GET /api/tenant/v0/apnscertificates/{id}/ to confirm you have the correct record.

Workflow

List existing APNs certificates via GET /api/tenant/v0/apnscertificates/ to identify the correct certificate id.

Unenroll or migrate all iOS devices relying on that certificate.

Send DELETE /api/tenant/v0/apnscertificates/{id}/ to remove the certificate record from Esper.

Upload and enroll a new APNs certificate if continued iOS MDM management is required.
