Flow:

  1. Re-run the gate (races / stale frontend state).
  2. Validate method against the provider registry (rejects disabled).
  3. Re-check provider availability at this instant.
  4. Optionally persist workspaces.default_payment_method.
  5. Ask the provider to start_subscribe (redirect for Stripe, intent row for credits, etc.).
