# Validate a VAT number against the VIES database

`POST /organizations/validate-vat`

## Request

- Base URL: `https://api.xfa.tech`
- URL: `https://api.xfa.tech/organizations/validate-vat`
- Auth: HTTP bearer

Validates a VAT number against the official European Union VIES (VAT Information Exchange System) database. Includes retry logic and rate limiting to comply with VIES best practices.

## Request body

  - `vat` string, required: VAT number to validate (e.g., NL123456789B01)

## Response `200`

VAT validation result

- object
  - `valid` boolean, required: Whether the VAT number is valid according to VIES
  - `country_code` string: Country code extracted from VAT number
  - `vat_number` string: VAT number without country code
  - `name` string: Company name from VIES (if valid)
  - `address` string: Company address from VIES (if valid)
  - `request_date` string, date-time: Date of the validation request
  - `request_identifier` string: Request identifier for audit purposes

## Other responses

- `400`: Bad request - invalid VAT number format
- `429`: Too many requests - rate limit exceeded
- `500`: Internal server error or VIES service unavailable
- `503`: VIES service temporarily unavailable
