# Import metadata into an existing project

`POST /import_metadata/{id}`

Import JSON or DDI/XML into an existing project. For microdata DDI, `options` is a comma-separated list of sections to apply. When `variable_groups` is included, the project's group tree is replaced from the DDI (VID membership is mapped to UIDs after variables are imported). JSON import maps `variable_groups` when the key is present (interchange rows or a nested tree).
