# Transfer workspace ownership

`PUT /admin/workspaces/{workspaceId}/owner`

## Request

- Auth: HTTP bearer

Make an existing member the only owner of a workspace, for example when the previous owner has left. Previous owners become admins. Returns the updated member list. Requires the `workspaces:manage` instance permission; API keys are rejected.

## Request body

  - `userId` string, required: An existing member who becomes the only owner. Previous owners become admins.

## Other responses

- `400`: The member is already the only owner
- `401`: Missing or invalid credentials
- `403`: The caller lacks the instance permission or is authenticated with an API key
- `404`: Workspace or member not found
- `429`: The API key exceeded its rate limit or usage quota. Wait the number of seconds in Retry-After before retrying. The X-RateLimit headers are sent only when the rate limit was hit.
