# find the merge base for 2 references

`GET /repositories/{repository}/refs/{sourceRef}/merge/{destinationBranch}`

## Request

- Base URL: `/api/v1` (relative, and the document was published on a file host, not at the API’s origin)
- URL: `/api/v1/repositories/{repository}/refs/{sourceRef}/merge/{destinationBranch}`
- Auth: one of:
  - HTTP bearer
  - HTTP basic
  - API key in cookie `internal_auth_session`

Found the merge base

- FindMergeBaseResult
  - `source_commit_id` string, required: The commit ID of the merge source
  - `destination_commit_id` string, required: The commit ID of the merge destination
  - `base_commit_id` string, required: The commit ID of the merge base

## Other responses

- `400`: Validation Error
- `401`: Unauthorized
- `404`: Resource Not Found
- `429`: too many requests
- `default`: Internal Server Error
