# Get expense breakdown by category

`GET /v1/platform/businesses/{business_id}/insights/expense-breakdown/`

## Request

- Base URL: `https://docs.thredfi.com` (the document declares no server; this is the origin it was published from)

Retrieve detailed breakdown of expenses by category with percentages.

        **Categories:**
        - Direct Costs: Cost of goods sold
        - Operating Expenses: Rent, salaries, utilities, etc.
        - Finance Costs: Interest expense, bank fees
        - Income Tax: Corporate tax

        **Each category includes:**
        - Total amount in cents
        - Percentage of total expenses
        - Individual GL accounts (sorted by amount descending)

        Categories are sorted by amount (largest first).
        All values are in cents. Currency is the business's base currency.

  - `business_id` string, uuid, required: Business UUID
  - `start_date` string, date, required: Report period start
  - `end_date` string, date, required: Report period end
  - `currency` string, required: Business base currency (e.g., EUR, GBP, USD)
  - `total_expenses_cents` integer, required: Total expenses across all categories in cents
  - `categories` ExpenseCategory[], required: Expense categories (sorted by amount descending)
    - `category` string, required: Category key (e.g., 'operating_expenses')
    - `display_name` string, required: Human-readable category name (e.g., 'Operating Expenses')
    - `total_cents` integer, required: Total amount for this category in cents
    - `percentage` number, double, required: Percentage of total expenses (0-100)
    - `accounts` ExpenseAccount[], required: Individual GL accounts within this category (sorted by amount descending)
      - `account_id` string, uuid, required: Account UUID
      - `account_code` string, required: Account code
      - `account_name` string, required: Account name
      - `amount_cents` integer, required: Total amount for this account in cents

## Other responses

- `400`: Validation errors in request data
- `401`: Authentication required - missing or invalid API key
- `403`: Permission denied - insufficient privileges
- `404`: Resource not found
- `409`: Conflict - resource already exists or invalid state transition
- `422`: Unprocessable entity - business logic validation failed
- `500`: Internal server error
