# Get Unread Total

`GET /api/chats/unread-total`

Aggregate unread-message counts for the nav and Dock badges (TOS-2508).

Replaces the app shell's full ``GET /api/chats`` fetch-and-sum: the badge
needs one integer, and computing it here rides the derived
``chat_has_unread_expr()`` comparison (TOS-3616), ``chats.last_message_at``
against ``chat_participants.read_watermark_at``, so only currently-unread
chats are aggregated. Mute resolution matches the list endpoint (muted
chats do not count toward the badge).

``self_unread`` (TOS-3144) is the self chat's share of ``total_unread``, not
a separate population - the Dock's Subconscious tab is the only surface that
can show it, since the self chat is excluded from the chat-list rows.
