# Delete Chat

`DELETE /api/chats/{chat_id}`

Soft-delete a chat (sets status='deleted'). Caller must be a participant.

TOS-3753: for a ROOM, only the owner may do this. Everything below - the
retrieval purge, the cognitive-event tombstone, the reproject - is
destructive for EVERY participant, not just the caller, which is why the
gate lives before it. A non-owner member leaves the room instead.
