# Read a model number from a photo

`POST /identify/photo`

## Request

  - HTTP bearer

Read the brand, model and part numbers from a photo of a label or nameplate and match them to products. Matches are returned as candidates, with what was read. The photo isn't stored.

## Request body

- object
  - `image` string, required: A photo of the label or nameplate as a data URL (data:image/jpeg;base64,...), under 4 MB.
  - `hint` string: Optional context, e.g. 'refrigerator label inside the door'.

## Other responses

- `400`: Bad input (code bad_request), or plain HTTP (https_required).
- `401`: Missing or invalid API key where one is required.
- `402`: Payment required: pay with x402 or credits and retry. Verified first, settled only for a completed decision.
- `429`: Rate limit; see Retry-After.
- `500`: Our error; retry once.
- `503`: Temporarily unavailable, or paid access is off (paid_access_off).
