# Change a user's participation settings

`PATCH /v1/{appId}/conversations/{conversationId}/participants/{userId}`

## Request

Changes a user's participation settings in a conversation. 

If a user is already a [participant](https://talkjs.com/docs/Reference/Concepts/Participants/) of a conversation, then you can change the following participation settings:

 - type of access to the conversation
 - notification settings

To prevent a participant from being able to read messages from or send messages to a conversation, set their access type to `"None"`.

The change participation operation is idempotent, and can be called multiple times in a row. This call only updates fields given in the payload, leaving the old ones as they were.

- `appId` string, required
- `conversationId` string, required
- `userId` string, required

## Request body

- ParticipationUpdateData: Participation settings to update a user who is part of a conversation.
  - `notify` union: Indicates whether a user should receive notifications for activity in this conversation.
    - boolean
    - string
  - `access` 'ReadWrite' | 'Read' | 'None': Indicates the type of access a user has to this conversation.

- `400`: Bad request
- `401`: Authorization information is missing or invalid.
- `404`: Resource not found
- `415`: Unsupported media type
- `429`: Too many requests
- `500`: Internal server error
