# Resolve a place name to a code

`GET /api/v1/search`

## Request

- Base URL: `https://suomiatlas.com`
- URL: `https://suomiatlas.com/api/v1/search`
- Auth: one of:
  - none
  - HTTP bearer

Start here. Every other operation takes a code, and this is the only one that accepts a name. Matching is diacritic-insensitive (`toolo` finds Töölö) and results are best-match first.

Not tier-gated: a name is not paid data.

- `q` string, required
- `kind` 'postal_area' | 'municipality' | 'region'
- `limit` integer

## Response `200`

Matches, best first.

- PlaceSearch
  - `query` string, required: The trimmed query, echoed.
  - `results` PlaceSearchResult[], required
    - `kind` 'postal_area' | 'municipality' | 'region', required
    - `code` string, required: Feed this to the other operations.
    - `name` string, required
    - `population` number, double, nullable, required: Present only for postal areas; null otherwise.
    - `populationYear` integer, nullable, required: Never null when `population` is set.

## Other responses

- `400`: A parameter was missing, malformed, or outside what this operation accepts. The message names the parameter.
