# One indicator series over time

`GET /api/v1/census/indicators/{program}/series`

The time series of one category x data type of a programme at one geography, monthly or quarterly, from `from` (default: two years before the latest published period) to `to` (default: the latest). `seasonally_adjusted` is true, false or any - many series exist in only one form. An error measure is its own data type (`E_SM` beside `SM`). A period past the latest one is an empty answer with a reason.

## Path parameters

- `program` string, required — Programme code from /census/indicators (marts, resconst, bfs, qtax, ...).

## Query parameters

- `category` string, required — Category code from /census/indicators/{program}/codes (required).
- `data_type` string, required — Data type code from /census/indicators/{program}/codes (required).
- `seasonally_adjusted` string — true, false or any
- `geo` string — US (every programme); NE, MW, SO, WE for resconst, ressales and hv; a state postal code for qtax.
- `from` string, nullable — First period (YYYY-MM or YYYY-QN).
- `to` string, nullable — Last period (YYYY-MM or YYYY-QN); default: the latest published period.

## Response `200`

One row per period (and per adjustment when `any`) with the decoded value.

- EnvelopeCensusIndicatorsProgramSeriesData
  - `data` CensusIndicatorsProgramSeriesData, required
    - `program` string, nullable — Programme code.
    - `title` string, nullable — Programme title.
    - `category` CensusIndicatorsProgramSeriesCategory
      - `code` string, nullable — Category code requested.
      - `label` string, nullable — Curated or NAICS label; null when undocumented.
    - `data_type` CensusIndicatorsProgramSeriesDataType
      - `code` string, nullable — Data type code requested.
      - `label` string, nullable — Curated label; null when undocumented.
    - `geo` string, nullable — Geography of the series: US, a region or a state postal code.
    - `seasonally_adjusted` string, nullable — What was requested: yes, no or any (any returns both forms when both exist).
    - `from` string, nullable — First period requested (default: 24 months or 8 quarters before the latest).
    - `to` string, nullable — Last period requested; null for an open range up to the latest.
    - `count` union — Number of items in this result set.
      - integer
      - number
    - `data` CensusIndicatorsProgramSeriesDatum[], nullable — One row per period (and per adjustment when any), oldest first, unadjusted before adjusted.
      - `period` string, nullable — YYYY-MM or YYYY-QN.
      - `value` union — Published value in the programme's units (USD millions for most; percent for MPC and rate types; counts for bfs). Null when the cell carries a symbol instead of a number, except Z which is 0.
        - integer
        - number
      - `flag` string, nullable — The Census Bureau symbol the cell carried instead of a number: S suppressed, Z rounds to zero, NA not available, X not applicable, D withheld; null for a numeric cell.
      - `seasonally_adjusted` boolean, nullable — Whether this row is the seasonally adjusted series.
      - `error` boolean, nullable — Whether this row is an error measure (upstream error_data=yes).
    - `dataset` string, nullable — Census dataset path the rows come from.
    - `source` string, nullable — Upstream data source identifier.
    - `reason` string, nullable — Present only when count is 0: why the answer is empty (a period past the latest one names the latest period available).
    - `note` string, nullable — Present when the requested `to` was past the latest published period: the range was clamped to that period, and `to` carries the clamped value.
  - `meta` SugraMeta, required — Metadata attached to every /api/v1/* response envelope.
    - `endpoint` string, required — Requested endpoint path.
    - `data_time` string, required — ISO 8601 UTC timestamp of the source data, not of the request.
    - `response_time` string, required — ISO 8601 UTC timestamp when this response was produced.
    - `provider` string, required — API name and version.
    - `source` string, nullable — Identifier of the primary upstream source used for this response.
    - `attribution` string, nullable — Human-readable attribution mandated by an upstream source (e.g. a securities regulator or self-regulatory organization). Present only on responses whose source requires the owner and source to be clearly identified. Do not remove or alter it when using the response.
    - `fallback_used` boolean, nullable — True when the primary source failed and a fallback produced the data.
    - `fallback_chain` string[], nullable — Ordered list of sources attempted, in the order they were tried.
    - `cached` boolean, nullable — True when this response was served from the internal cache.
    - `stale` boolean, nullable — True when the cached response was returned after the upstream rate-limited or errored. Clients can use this to detect degraded data.

## Other responses

- `401` — Missing or invalid `x-api-key` header. JSON body with a stable `code` distinguishing `missing_api_key` (no header sent) from `invalid_api_key` (header sent, key not accepted); any other 401 source carries the generic `unauthorized` with its detail as `reason`. Plus `hint`. `plan` is always null on 401 - an unauthenticated request has no plan; quota exhaustion is 429, not 401.
- `422` — Validation Error
- `429` — Daily rate limit exceeded. Check `X-RateLimit-Reset` for the next window.
- `502` — The upstream source answered with an error or a malformed body. `detail` carries the source, the upstream status and a retry hint.
- `503` — Upstream unreachable (typed `detail` object with source and retry hint) or the legacy blanket unavailability (string `detail`).
- `504` — The upstream source did not answer within the client deadline.
