# Unpublish a content item

`POST /org/content/{id}/unpublish`

## Request

- Auth: API key in header `X-API-Key`

Unpublishes a content item from its external destinations. Provide `publish_record_ids` to unpublish only those destinations (returns `200` with the per-destination result); omit the body to unpublish from every destination (usually `204`, or `200` when the item was manually marked published). Only content-engine content can be unpublished. Requires the GEO product.

- `id` string, uuid, required

## Request body

- UnpublishContentRequest: Optional body for unpublish. Provide `publish_record_ids` to unpublish only those destinations; omit the body to unpublish from every destination.
  - `publish_record_ids` string[]: The specific publish-record ids to unpublish. Omit to unpublish all destinations.

## Response `200`

The targeted unpublish result (per-record or manual-mark path).

- UnpublishContentResponse: The result of a targeted (per-record) or manual-mark unpublish.
  - `unpublished_count` integer, required: How many destinations were unpublished.
  - `failures` string[], nullable, required: Human-readable messages for destinations that could not be unpublished; null or empty when every requested destination was unpublished.

## Other responses

- `204`: Every destination was unpublished. No content.
- `400`: The request was malformed — a bad path/query parameter or an invalid value.
- `401`: Missing or invalid credentials — supply a valid org API key in the `X-API-Key` header.
- `403`: The API key is authenticated but not permitted to access this resource.
- `404`: The requested resource does not exist or is not visible to this key.
- `409`: The request conflicts with the current state (e.g. a duplicate).
- `502`: An upstream dependency failed or rejected the request.
