# Hand the active agent role to another agent

`POST /api/v1/chats/{id}/hand_off`

## Request

Callable by any human member, or by the currently-active agent. Guarded by Chat::HANDOFF_RUNAWAY_LIMIT (20 agent-to-agent hops with no human speaking in between, within a 1-hour window) -- past it the chat is paused with a posted system event until a human speaks.

- ChatSession: chat.as_json plus the per-viewer fields ChatsController merges on -- the `session` key in chats#index/#show/#previous. Only `id` is guaranteed: the per-viewer keys (pinned_at, muted, archived_at, their_language, observer, joined_at, unread_count, mediation_auto_send, advisor_lane, sidechains, member_count) come with GET /chats and GET /chats/{id}, and the response of POST /chats (create) can omit them.

## Other responses

- `401`: Missing or invalid credentials.
- `403`: Only the active agent or a human member can hand off. / You can't message this user.
- `422`: No such agent. / already the active agent / hand-off target must be an Agent / the runaway pause message.
