# Recent messages in an item's chat

`GET /api/v1/items/{id}/messages`

## Request

- Base URL: `https://api.roma.app`
- URL: `https://api.roma.app/api/v1/items/{id}/messages`
- Auth: HTTP bearer

Read the recent messages in an item's chat: what the user said there, what Roma replied, and what any agent posted with post_chat_message. On a shared item (shared on its own or through its list) the chat is its Thread, the one conversation the owner and every member see, so you read what the members said too. Pass `since` to read only what arrived after a moment you already saw; a read that repeats on a schedule passes the `createdAt` of the last message it saw every time. Empty when the item has no chat yet.

## Path parameters

- `id` string, required

## Query parameters

- `since` string: ISO 8601 instant. Only messages created after it are returned, oldest first: the `createdAt` of the last message you saw.
- `limit` integer: Max messages (default 20).

## Response `200`

The tool's result.

- object
  - `sessionId` string, nullable, required
  - `messages` object[], required
    - `id` string, required
    - `role` 'user' | 'assistant', required
    - `authorName` string, nullable, required
    - `text` string, required
    - `createdAt` string, required

## Other responses

- `400`: The request was understood and refused; the error says what to change.
- `401`: No usable bearer token.
- `404`: No such item for this account.
- `405`: The path exists but not with this method; Allow lists the ones that work.
- `429`: Over the rate limit; wait for Retry-After.
