# Rename, recolor or recategorize a custom status.

`PATCH /project-statuses/{id}`

## Request

Patches one status. Pass at least one of `name`, `color`, `category`. Changing `category` moves every task already in the stage with it, in one step: they take the new base `status` (a stage made `completed` completes them, with `completed_at`), keep their stage, and each gets one history entry. The response is the updated status; list the tasks to see them. A status of a team or workspace palette is refused with 409 `inherited_palette` — it is not changed through a project. The caller must be a manager of the project: on a team project an accepted owner or admin of its team; on a project outside any team, the person it belongs to (403 `forbidden` otherwise). 404 when the project is not visible to the caller. ## Other responses

- `400`: Invalid request shape.
- `401`: Missing or invalid access token.
- `403`: Token lacks the required scope.
- `404`: No such status visible to the caller.
- `409`: The status belongs to a team or workspace palette (`inherited_palette`). Transient, nothing written — send the same request again: `deadlock` (a category change moves the tasks in the status and met a task write holding one of them) or `status_palette_busy` (the status list changed meanwhile).
- `422`: Request body failed schema validation.
- `429`: Rate-limit exceeded for this tier.
