# Delete a file from managed storage

`DELETE /files/{fileId}`

## Request

- Base URL: `https://renderio.dev/api/v1`
- URL: `https://renderio.dev/api/v1/files/{fileId}`
- Auth: API key in header `X-API-KEY`

External BYOB objects are customer-owned and are returned with `deleted: false` and `external: true` without being changed.

## Response `200`

File deleted

- DeleteFileResponse
  - `deleted` boolean, required: False when the requested file is a customer-owned BYOB object.
  - `file_id` string, uuid, required
  - `external` boolean: Present and true when the object belongs to an external BYOB destination and was not deleted.

## Other responses

- `401`: Missing or invalid API key
- `404`: Resource not found
- `429`: Rate limit exceeded — retry after the `Retry-After` interval
