# Create Member by Customer External ID

`POST /v1/customers/external/{external_id}/members`

## Request

- Base URL: `https://api.polar.sh`
- URL: `https://api.polar.sh/v1/customers/external/{external_id}/members`
- Auth: one of:
  - OpenID Connect (`/.well-known/openid-configuration`, scopes: `members:write`)
  - HTTP bearer
  - HTTP bearer

Create a new member for a customer identified by its external ID.

**Scopes**: `members:write`

## Path parameters

- `external_id` string, required: The customer external ID.

## Request body

- MemberCreateFromCustomer: Schema for creating a new member nested under a customer. The customer is taken from the URL path, so it's not part of the body.
  - `email` string, email, required: The email address of the member.
  - `name` string, nullable: The name of the member.
  - `external_id` string, nullable: The ID of the member in your system. This must be unique within the customer.
  - `role` 'member' | 'billing_manager': The role of the member within the customer. To assign or transfer ownership, use the member update endpoint.

## Response `201`

Member created.

- Member: A member of a customer.
  - `id` string, uuid4, required: The ID of the member.
  - `created_at` string, date-time, required: Creation timestamp of the object.
  - `modified_at` string, date-time, nullable, required: Last modification timestamp of the object.
  - `customer_id` string, uuid4, required: The ID of the customer this member belongs to.
  - `email` string, required: The email address of the member.
  - `name` string, nullable, required: The name of the member.
  - `external_id` string, nullable, required: The ID of the member in your system. This must be unique within the customer.
  - `role` 'owner' | 'billing_manager' | 'member', required

## Other responses

- `403`: Not permitted to add members.
- `404`: Customer not found.
- `409`: The external customer ID matches customers in several accessible organizations.
- `422`: Validation Error
