# Renew card expiration date

`PATCH /wallet/v2/cards/{cardId}/renew`

## Request

- Base URL: `https://sandbox.pismolabs.io`
- URL: `https://sandbox.pismolabs.io/wallet/v2/cards/{cardId}/renew`
- Auth: HTTP bearer

Renew a card via setting a new expiration date.

**Notes:**

 * Renewal can be done for `PLASTIC` and `VIRTUAL` cards.
 * Cards with status `UNNUMBERED`, `UNBOUND`, `CREATED`, or final status cannot be renewed.
 * This endpoint generates a [Card updated](https://developers.pismo.io/events/docs/cards-update-1) event.
 * This endpoint requires an account token—an access token encoded with a Pismo account ID. Tokens can expire quickly, which can result in a **401 Unauthorized** error message.

For more information, refer to the [Card renewal](doc:card-renewal) guide.

## Path parameters

- `cardId` string, required

## Request body

- CardExpirationRenewBody: Card expiration date renewal object

- CardExpirationRenewResponse: Card expiration date renewal response object
 - `id` integer: Pismo card ID
 - `status` 'WAITING' | 'APPLIED': Expiration date renewal request status. * `WAITING`—Renewal is scheduled to be applied when the card is [activated](ref:put-v1-card-activate). * `APPLIED`—New expiration date was applied to the card.
 - `new_expiration_date` string: New card expiration date. Format = YYMM. **MUST** be later than the card's current `expiration_date`.

## Other responses

- `400`: Bad request. Possible causes: * `new_expiration_date` is missing or not in `YYMM` format. * Month is not between `01` and `12`. * `new_expiration_date` is not later than the card's current expiration date. * Card type is not `PLASTIC` or `VIRTUAL`. * Card status is `UNNUMBERED`, `UNBOUND`, `CREATED` or final status.
