# Activate physical card

`PUT /wallet/v1/customers/{customerId}/accounts/{accountId}/cards/{cardId}/activate`

Activate a physical card.

A physical card is initially blocked for transactions until activated.  This prevents unauthorized use until the cardholder takes delivery. You do not have to activate a card to tokenize it for a digital wallet.

**Notes**

  * Besides activating a new card, you can use this endpoint to activate (renew) an old card with a new expiration date. For more information, refer to the [Card renewal](doc:card-renewal) guide.

  * This endpoint generates a [Card updated](https://developers.pismo.io/events/docs/cards-update-1) event. For activation, `operation_type` =  `ACTIVATE`. For renewal,  `operation_type` = `EXPIRATION_DATE_RENEWED`.

Card activated or renewed success response

- CardActivatedSuccessResponse: Physical card activated success response
  - `message` string: Activation result message. * `The card was successfully unblocked`—The card was activated and its status changed to `NORMAL`. * `Expiration date successfully updated`—A scheduled expiration date renewal was applied and the card's status was kept unchanged. enum: - "The card was successfully unblocked" - "Expiration date successfully updated"

## Other responses

- `204`: No Content
- `401`: Access token is missing or invalid
- `403`: You don't have permission to access this resource
- `500`: Internal server error
