# Get a policy template.

`GET /api/policies/templates/{templateName}`

## Request

- Base URL: `/` (relative, and the document was published on a file host, not at the API’s origin)
- URL: `/api/policies/templates/{templateName}`
- Auth: HTTP bearer

Returns a starting point for a new policy: native policy JSON that Philter accepts for the running policy schema version, to edit and save with POST /api/policies. The template named default is the policy every new user's default policy is created from. A template is not a policy and cannot be used to redact until it is saved as one. Requires the `policies:read` scope.

- `401`: The Authorization header is absent or the API key is not recognized.
- `403`: Insufficient scope, disabled API, or access denied.
- `404`: There is no template with the given name.
- `406`: No representation matches Accept.
- `413`: Content Too Large
- `415`: Unsupported Media Type
- `500`: Internal Server Error
- `503`: Service Unavailable
