# Request a signup link

`POST /v1/auth/register`

## Request

- Base URL: `https://api.patricia.app` (the document declares no server; this is the origin it was published from)
- URL: `https://api.patricia.app/v1/auth/register`
- Auth: none declared

Step one of email signup. Creates no user or password. It may mail a verification link to a free address or a tokenless sign-in notice to a live owner. Repeat notices and non-live owners receive no message. Answers 202 whether or not the address can be registered.

## Request body

- RegisterRequest: Sign-up STEP ONE: ask for a verification link. Creates nothing. There is deliberately no password field. A password supplied here would have to be stored against an address nobody has proved they can read, which is exactly the pre-claim this two-step flow exists to close: the row is later adopted by the real owner's SSO login or invitation with that hash intact, and whoever pre-claimed the address can then sign in as them. The password is chosen in :class:`EmailVerificationRequest`, after the emailed link comes back.
  - `email` string, email, required
  - `captcha_token` string

## Response `202`

Always the same acknowledgement.

- AuthEmailAcceptedResponse: The ONE answer both link-request endpoints give, whatever the address. A body that varied by outcome — or a 404 for an unknown address — would turn either endpoint into an account-existence oracle for anyone who can type an email in.
  - `status` 'accepted'

## Other responses

- `400`: Captcha required or rejected — see ``code`` (``CAPTCHA_REQUIRED`` / ``CAPTCHA_REJECTED``)
- `422`: Validation Error
- `429`: Too many attempts against this address (``TOO_MANY_REQUESTS``), or too many requests from this client (``RATE_LIMITED``)
- `502`: Captcha verification unavailable (``CAPTCHA_ERROR``)
