# Remove a folder

`DELETE /v1/assets/folders/{folder_id}`

## Request

Remove a folder. **Nothing inside it is deleted** — every file goes back to being unfiled and stays in the library, and every folder inside it moves up one level to where this folder was. The response says how many of each moved. Answers 404 when the folder does not exist or belongs to another workspace, and 409 when lifting one of its folders would collide with a name already at that level.

Successful Response

- AssetFolderRemoved: What removing a folder did — the copy the dashboard shows afterwards. Both counts exist so the confirmation can be specific ("Its 5 files are back at the top level and its 2 folders moved up one level") rather than reassuring in the abstract. Removing a folder never removes a file and never removes a folder inside it.
  - `id` string, uuid, required
  - `name` string, required
  - `unfiled_count` integer, required: Live files that went back to being unfiled.
  - `reparented_count` integer: Folders that were inside it and have moved up one level. None of them is deleted.

## Other responses

- `400`: Bad request
- `401`: Unauthorized
- `403`: Forbidden. Inspect response body `code` for the specific reason (for example: PERMISSION_DENIED, EMAIL_NOT_VERIFIED, TENANT_ACCESS_REQUIRED, ROLE_UNRESOLVED)
- `404`: No such folder in this workspace.
- `409`: A folder with that name already exists.
- `422`: Validation error
