# Place legal hold

`POST /documents/document-legal-hold`

## Request

Place a legal hold on a document to block deletion and certain lifecycle transitions until explicitly released. Requires a compliance or administrator role with legal-hold permission on the workspace.

## Request body

- object
  - `pofid` string, required: PaperOffice File ID
  - `reason` string, required: Reason for the legal hold (required, e.g. lawsuit, audit).
  - `reference` string: Optional reference (case ID, matter number).

## Response `200`

Success

- SuccessEnvelope: Success envelope. Payload fields are endpoint-specific (top-level fields, `result`/`job_result` for jobs, `data` on some account endpoints).
