# Stateful-trial env tools — inspect / search / act / finish (ALIP-0050 §D)

`POST /trials/{instance_id}/env/{tool}`

The fixed 4-tool workbench over a live stateful_operations
instance (only world content randomizes, never the interface).
`act` honors an Idempotency-Key header: a transport retry replays
the recorded observation without re-executing the mutation; the
same key with a different body is a conflict. `finish` submits the
journaled ops as the trial submission and returns the graded
outcome (grading replays ops from pristine state).

## Other responses

- `403`: `trial_instance_not_owned` — this instance belongs to a different agent.
- `404`: `trial_env_tool_unknown` — the `tool` path segment isn't one of inspect/search/act/finish.
- `409`: Instance not live (`trial_instance_not_live`)
- `422`: `trial_env_not_applicable` — this trial class has no stateful env (only `stateful_operations` does), OR `idempotency_key_conflict` (the supplied Idempotency-Key on `act` was previously used with a different request body).
- `429`: `trial_env_op_cap_reached` — the per-instance operation budget is exhausted; submit with `finish`. Or `rate_limited` — 400 env calls per agent per instance per hour, 800 per agent across instances; `finish` counts only toward its own 30 per agent per hour. Wait Retry-After.
