# A specific charge is refunded, fully or partially.

`POST payment.refunded` (webhook)

### When this fires

A per-payment refund settles. Pairs with `subscription.refunded` when the refund covers the entire subscription.

> **Settled refunds only.** A refund a provider has queued but not yet paid out raises nothing; access is never revoked for money that has not actually moved.

### Caveats

- Emitted by Stripe, PayPal, Paystack, Razorpay and Skrill. CoinPayments and CeyPay expose no refund notification.
- Raised for partial refunds as well as full ones. Read `full_refund` to tell them apart; a partial refund leaves the subscription and its access untouched.
- Stripe reports a running total across refunds; the `amount` here is **this** refund, not the cumulative figure.
- Distinct from `subscription.refunded`, which represents the subscription's reaction. A refund may emit only `payment.refunded` if the subscription itself is unaffected.
- Partial refunds are represented by `amount` being less than the original charge.

## Payload

- object: The envelope every event is delivered in.
  - `id` string, required: A ULID unique to the event, prefixed `evt_`. Every retry carries the same id, so it is the key to deduplicate on.
  - `type` 'payment.refunded', required: The event name, always `payment.refunded` here.
  - `created_at` string, date-time, required: When the event was emitted, server time, ISO 8601.
  - `api_version` string, required: The contract version of the payload shape, `2026-05-01` today. A breaking change to a shape ships under a new version.
  - `project_id` string, uuid, nullable, required: The project the event belongs to; null for team-scoped and billing events.
  - `data` object, required: The event-specific payload. Keys that do not apply to a given emission are omitted rather than sent as null, so check for presence.
    - `subscription_id` string, uuid, required: Subscription the original payment belonged to.
    - `plan_id` string, uuid, required: Plan the subscription was on.
    - `subscriber_id` string, uuid, required: Subscriber's project-scoped user id.
    - `external_payment_id` string, nullable, required: Provider charge id that was refunded. `null` when the provider's refund payload carried no originating charge id (Razorpay).
    - `amount` string, decimal, required: Refunded amount in major units of the subscription's currency, as a decimal string. The currency itself is not carried on this event; resolve it from the plan or from the preceding `payment.succeeded`.
    - `full_refund` boolean, required: `true` when the refund unwinds the whole charge. A full refund additionally emits `subscription.refunded` and immediately revokes access; a partial one does not.
    - `reason` string: Provider-supplied refund reason, or `chargeback` for reversals. Omitted entirely when the provider supplied none, never sent as `null`.

## Acknowledgement `2XX`

Your endpoint acknowledged the delivery. Any 2xx status within 30 seconds marks it delivered; the response body is ignored.

## Other responses

- `default`: Any other status, a connection failure, or no answer within 30 seconds counts as a failed attempt. The delivery is retried 8 times, after 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 2 minutes, 10 minutes, 1 hour, 6 hours, 1 day, 3 days; the last failure dead-letters it, and it can be retried from the dashboard or `POST /v1/webhook-deliveries/{delivery}/retry`. After 20 consecutive failures the endpoint is paused until it is resumed.
