# Mint an instant free API key

`POST /api/v1/keys`

## Request

- Base URL: `https://macfax.com`
- URL: `https://macfax.com/api/v1/keys`
- Auth: one of:
  - none
  - HTTP bearer
  - API key in header `X-Api-Key`
  - API key in query parameter `api_key`

Anonymous → identified in one request: the key comes back in the response (shown once, stored hashed), no email, no account. Free keys raise read limits roughly 10×. Rate limits: 2/min and 5/day per anonymous IP; 2/min and 5/day with a free key.

## Request body

- object
  - `note` string: Your own label for the key, e.g. "inventory sync".
  - `source` 'bulk_page' | 'wall' | 'developers' | 'sheets' | 'cli' | 'outreach' | 'community': Set by Macfax's own pages and tools to say where the key was minted. Unknown values are ignored.

## Response `201`

The key — store it now.

## Other responses

- `429`: Key-minting rate limited.
