# Update a topic

`PATCH /audience/topics/{topicId}`

## Request

Partially update a topic. The `default_subscription` field is immutable. Requires the `audience:write` scope and is blocked for sandbox API keys.

- `topicId` string, uuid, required

## Request body

- UpdateAudienceTopicRequest: Update a topic. All fields are optional. The `default_subscription` field is immutable.
  - `name` string
  - `description` string, nullable
  - `visibility` 'private' | 'public': Whether the topic is visible to public subscription pages

    - `default_subscription` 'opt_in' | 'opt_out', required: Default subscription state for newly-created contacts. `opt_in` means the contact must subscribe themselves (not auto-attached). `opt_out` means the contact is subscribed by default and must opt out to leave (auto-attached on creation).
    - `visibility` 'private' | 'public', required: Whether the topic is visible to public subscription pages
    - `contacts_count` integer, required: Number of subscribed contacts on the topic. Contacts that are unsubscribed, bounced or unverified are not counted.
    - `created_at` string, date-time, nullable, required

## Other responses

- `401`: Unauthorized - Missing or invalid API key
- `403`: Forbidden - API key does not have the required scope
- `404`: Resource not found
- `422`: Validation error
- `500`: Internal server error
- `503`: Service unavailable - the API key could not be verified, so the request was not processed. This does not mean the key is invalid; retry after the delay given in the Retry-After header.
