# Add legal hold custodians

`POST /v1/legal-holds/{hold_id}/custodians`

## Request

- Base URL: `https://public-api.granola.ai`
- URL: `https://public-api.granola.ai/v1/legal-holds/{hold_id}/custodians`
- Auth: HTTP bearer

Names users on a hold, by email or by Granola user id. Idempotent: the response carries the request's full resolved set, whether each entry was newly added or already present.

## Path parameters

- `hold_id` string, required: The legal hold id. Case-insensitive.

## Request body

- AddLegalHoldCustodiansBody
  - `custodians` LegalHoldCustodianInput[], required: Users to name on this hold
    - `email` string, email: The custodian's email address. Use this when your system knows employees by email rather than by Granola user id.
    - `id` string: The custodian's Granola user id. Case-insensitive.

## Response `200`

The custodians named in the request

- AddLegalHoldCustodiansOutput
  - `custodians` LegalHoldCustodian[], required
    - `id` string, required: The unique identifier for the custodian entry
    - `object` 'legal_hold_custodian', required: The type of object
    - `user` object, required: The person this custodian entry names. `email` is null once their Granola account has been deleted.
      - `object` 'user', required
      - `id` string, required
      - `email` string, email, nullable, required
    - `added_at` string, date-time, required: When this person was named by the hold
    - `removed_at` string, date-time, nullable, required: When this person was removed from the hold, or null while they are named. Removed custodians are always returned, so the record of who was held survives.

## Other responses

- `400`: Bad request, or a custodian is not a member of this workspace
- `401`: Unauthorized - Invalid API key
- `404`: Not found
