# Suggest a few next steps after the chat's latest answer. The first request for an answer makes one small request to the chat's model, with only the last question and answer, and its cost counts toward the chat's spend. The result is saved on the answer, and later requests for it return the saved set at no cost.

`POST /ai/conversations/{public_id}/suggestions`

## Request

- Base URL: `/api` (relative, and the document was published on a file host, not at the API’s origin)
- URL: `/api/ai/conversations/{public_id}/suggestions`
- Auth: HTTP bearer

## Path parameters

- `public_id` string, required

## Request body

- SuggestNextStepsRequest: Which answer to suggest next steps for.
  - `answer` string, nullable: Cursor of the answer the user is looking at, from the message list. When given, it must still be the chat's latest answer. Without it the latest answer is used.

## Response `200`

Suggested next steps

- NextSteps: Suggestions for one answer.
  - `answer` string, required: Cursor of the answer they follow on from, as in the message list.
  - `model` string, required: The model that wrote them.
  - `saved` boolean, required: True when they were saved earlier and returned without a new request.
  - `suggestions` string[], required

## Other responses

- `400`: The answer cursor is malformed
- `401`: Unauthorized
- `403`: Insufficient permissions
- `404`: Conversation not found
- `409`: Suggestions are off or unavailable in this chat, a turn is running, the answer is no longer the latest, there is no answer yet, or a suggestion is already being made
- `500`: Internal server error
- `502`: The model failed to suggest anything
