# Update a chat

`PATCH /chats/{id}`

## Request

- Base URL: `https://app.gc.ai/api/external/v1`

Update a chat's metadata (title, summary, project). Pass `project_id: null` to remove a chat from its project.

## Path parameters

- `id` string, uuid, required: The chat ID

## Request body

- UpdateChatRequest
  - `title` string: New chat title
  - `summary` string, nullable: New chat summary
  - `project_id` string, uuid, nullable: Move to a project (UUID) or remove from project (null)

## Response `200`

Updated chat

- ChatResponse
  - `id` string, uuid, required: Unique chat identifier
  - `title` string, nullable, required: Chat title, or null if untitled
  - `summary` string, nullable, required: AI-generated summary, or null
  - `project_id` string, uuid, nullable, required: Associated project ID, or null
  - `is_public` boolean, required: Whether the chat has a public share link
  - `is_access_controlled` boolean, required: When true, only the creator and explicitly granted users can see the chat
  - `source` string, nullable, required: Origin of the chat (web, api, microsoft-word)
  - `created_at` string, required: ISO 8601 creation timestamp
  - `updated_at` string, required: ISO 8601 last-update timestamp

## Other responses

- `400`: Invalid chat ID or request body
- `401`: Missing or malformed API key
- `403`: Forbidden — not the chat creator or insufficient project access
- `404`: Chat not found or access denied
- `429`: Rate limit exceeded. See [Rate Limits](https://docs.gc.ai/api-reference/concepts/rate-limits) for the tiers, limits, and how to back off.
- `500`: Internal server error
- `503`: Service temporarily unavailable
