# Duplicate a chat

`POST /chats/{id}/duplicate`

Create a full copy of a chat including all messages and attached files. The new chat is a separate, editable conversation.

## Path parameters

- `id` string, uuid, required: The chat ID

## Request body

- DuplicateChatRequest
  - `title` string: Title for the duplicate (defaults to source title with "Copy of" prefix)
  - `project_id` string, uuid: Place the duplicate in a different project

## Response `201`

Chat duplicated

- DuplicateResponse
  - `chat` ChatResponse, required
    - `id` string, uuid, required: Unique chat identifier
    - `title` string, nullable, required: Chat title, or null if untitled
    - `summary` string, nullable, required: AI-generated summary, or null
    - `project_id` string, uuid, nullable, required: Associated project ID, or null
    - `is_public` boolean, required: Whether the chat has a public share link
    - `is_access_controlled` boolean, required: When true, only the creator and explicitly granted users can see the chat
    - `source` string, nullable, required: Origin of the chat (web, api, microsoft-word)
    - `created_at` string, required: ISO 8601 creation timestamp
    - `updated_at` string, required: ISO 8601 last-update timestamp

## Other responses

- `400`: Invalid chat ID or request body
- `401`: Missing or malformed API key
- `403`: Project access required
- `404`: Chat not found or access denied
- `429`: Rate limit exceeded. See [Rate Limits](https://docs.gc.ai/api-reference/concepts/rate-limits) for the tiers, limits, and how to back off.
- `500`: Failed to load chat messages
- `503`: Service temporarily unavailable
