# What is missing, by dataset

`GET /meta/coverage`

For every dataset: how many places it covers, out of how many at its grain, and the source's own coverage caveat. Pass `dataset` to list the places that dataset lacks, with where the gaps are by region. Missing means no figure — never a zero. Keys a source publishes that match no current place (a superseded province code) are reported, not mapped onto a current place. Draft datasets are listed as not served, without counts.

    - `slug` string, required
    - `label` string, required
    - `source` string, required: The institution to cite, e.g. "ISTAT" or "Eurostat".
    - `vintage` string, required: The period the data describes, e.g. "2025H2", "2024" or "2015–2024" — not when it was fetched.
    - `grain` 'comune' | 'province' | 'region' | 'nuts2' | 'nuts3' | 'national', required: The geographic level the source publishes at. NUTS 2 and NUTS 3 are Eurostat/OECD statistical regions — close to, but not the same as, Italy's regions and provinces. Never present a coarser-grain value as if it were measured for one comune.
    - `servable` boolean, required: False while a hand-curated dataset is still "draft" (unverified against its legislation). A non-servable dataset returns no values anywhere in this API.
    - `page` string: The human-readable page for this dataset on expatliving.it — link readers here.
    - `status` 'complete' | 'partial' | 'universe_not_fixed' | 'not_served', required: complete: every place at this grain. partial: some places missing. universe_not_fixed: NUTS or national data with no fixed list of places to count against. not_served: a draft dataset, whose figures and counts are not published.
    - `covered` integer, nullable, required: Places with a figure. null when not served.
    - `of` integer, nullable, required: Places at this grain (comuni, provinces or regions). null when there is no fixed list.
    - `missing` integer, nullable, required: Places with no figure: of minus covered. Absent data, never a zero.
    - `note` string: The source's own coverage caveat, or why no count is given.
    - `keysOutsideCurrentList` string[]: Keys the source publishes that match no place on the current list (e.g. a superseded province code). Never mapped onto a current place.
    - `missingPlacesQuery` string: Path that lists the missing places: GET /meta/coverage?dataset=.
  - `missingPlaces` object: Present only when `dataset` was given and it has missing places.
