# Update User Memory

`PATCH /user-memories/{memory_id}`

Change where one of the caller's memories applies, or switch it on or
off. Its text is not editable. Someone else's id answers 404, like an id
that does not exist.

## Path parameters

- `memory_id` string, required

## Request body

- UserMemoryUpdate — What the settings list can change: what an entry governs, the levels it applies to, and whether it is switched on. The text is never rewritten by hand (EXC-801); a request carrying it is ignored. An omitted field is left as is; an empty `grades` list means every level, and `categories` must name at least one.

## Response `200`

Successful Response

- UserMemoryResponse — One line of the settings list: what is remembered, where it applies, whether it is switched on, when and by which writer it was stored, and the conversation it came from when there is one. Deliberately narrower than the domain model: `status` is always `active` here and the confirmation bookkeeping is not something the list shows. `categories` say what it governs (EXC-956); `is_grading_rule` is derived from them (`grading` among them) and kept for older clients. The title is left out: it repeats the statement, which the list shows in full (EXC-801).
