# Verify an email

`POST /v1/email-validation/single/`

## Request

Verify one email address and get its deliverability verdict.

This call is synchronous: the verdict comes back in the response. Use it for one-off checks, such as validating an address a user just typed in. For a list of addresses use `POST /v1/email-validation/` instead, which verifies them in the background.

**Slow checks:** if the check is still running after about 25 seconds you get `202` with a `job_id` instead. The check carries on and is billed the same way; poll `GET /v1/email-validation/{job_id}/` for the verdict.

Verifying an address costs 1 credit, whatever the verdict.

## Request body

- EmailValidationIn
  - `email` string, required: The email address to verify.

## Response `200`

OK

- EmailValidationOut: Single email-validation response (matches old SingleEmailValidationCreateView).
  - `success` boolean: True when a verdict was reached, false when verification failed.
  - `job_id` string: Reference for this verification, useful when correlating it with your own logs. Nothing is queued, so there is no job to poll.
  - `prospect` EmailValidationProspectOut, required
    - `email` string: The email address that was verified.
    - `email_validity` string, nullable: Deliverability verdict: `safe` (deliverable), `riskier` (deliverable but lower confidence), `suspect` (could not be confirmed) or `invalid` (undeliverable). Null when verification did not complete.
    - `status` string: Whether verification ran: `complete` when a verdict was reached, `failed` when it could not be.
    - `error_message` string, nullable: Why verification failed. Null when it succeeded.

## Other responses

- `202`: Accepted
- `401`: The API key is missing, malformed or unknown.
- `402`: Not enough credits to cover the request.
- `422`: The request body or a supplied URL failed validation.
