# Check whether a custom variable exists

`GET /lists/custom-variable/check`

## Request

- Base URL: `https://api.emelia.io`
- URL: `https://api.emelia.io/lists/custom-variable/check`
- Auth: API key in header `Authorization`

Tells whether a name is already taken for a schema, either by one of your custom variables (`reason: custom_variable`) or by a standard field (`lead_field` or `company_field`). The name is normalized with the same rule as the creation route and the normalized `technicalName` is returned.

## Query parameters

- `technicalName` string, required
- `schema` 'lead' | 'company', required

## Response `200`

Check result.

- ListsCustomVariableCheck
  - `exists` boolean, required
  - `reason` 'custom_variable' | 'lead_field' | 'company_field': Present when `exists` is true.
  - `technicalName` string, required: The normalized name that was checked.

## Other responses

- `401`: Missing, unknown or disabled API key, or the account of the key no longer exists. Note the body shape: `error` and `code`, not `message`.
- `422`: Missing or invalid query parameter.
- `500`: Unexpected server error. `error`, when present, is a raw internal message: do not parse it. Retry later.
