# Stop and ask the owner

`POST /api/assistant/tasks/{id}/escalate`

## Request

The assignee asks a question with the evidence and, when useful, the options it sees. The owner answers with the ordinary choose or instruct interactions on the decision this creates; the matter shows in Today as needing the owner, the lease is released, the task waits. Requires `assistant:write`.

- `400`: Invalid escalation
- `401`: Missing or invalid API key
- `403`: The matter is not handed to the caller
- `404`: No such task in the caller's scope
- `429`: Rate limit exceeded - wait and retry
