# Pause or start a test

`PUT /api/v1/synthetics/tests/{public_id}/status`

## Request

- Base URL: `https://api.datadoghq.com`
- URL: `https://api.datadoghq.com/api/v1/synthetics/tests/{public_id}/status`
- Auth: one of:
  - API key in header `DD-API-KEY` and API key in header `DD-APPLICATION-KEY`
  - OAuth 2
    - Authorization code: `/oauth2/v1/authorize`
    - Token URL: `/oauth2/v1/token` scopes: `synthetics_write`

Pause or start a Synthetic test by changing the status.

## Path parameters

- `public_id` string, required

## Request body

- SyntheticsUpdateTestPauseStatusPayload: Object to start or pause an existing Synthetic test.
  - `new_status` 'live' | 'paused': Define whether you want to start (`live`) or pause (`paused`) a Synthetic test.

## Response `200`

OK - Returns a boolean indicating if the update was successful.

## Other responses

- `400`: JSON format is wrong.
- `403`: Forbidden
- `404`: - Synthetic Monitoring is not activated for the user - Test is not owned by the user
- `429`: Too many requests
