# Check a mailbox for new mail now

`POST /api/v1/mail/mailboxes/{id}/fetch`

## Request

- Base URL: `http://localhost:5180`
- URL: `http://localhost:5180/api/v1/mail/mailboxes/{id}/fetch`
- Auth: API key in cookie `better-auth.session_token`

Reads the mailbox for anything new, without waiting for the mail service to notice it. The read runs on its own and files what it finds; a read already under way finishes and then looks once more, so asking twice reads once.

## Path parameters

- `id` string, required

## Response `200`

A read was asked for.

- object
  - `ok` unknown, required
  - `data` object, required
    - `mailboxId` string, required: Stable record id, e.g. `lse_012`.
    - `started` unknown, required
  - `meta` object, required
    - `requestId` string, required: Echoed in the x-request-id header. Quote it in a bug report.

## Other responses

- `404`: No such mailbox on this team.
- `422`: The mailbox cannot be read this way: it does not sign in with a password, has no stored password, or this deployment has no mail worker (`details.reason`).
