The typed compliance walk over the stored reference pair — what a
document cites (``out``), what cites it (``in``), or ``both``, optionally
filtered by relation kind (``cites`` / ``updates``).

The pair IS the graph (the ROADMAP verdict): plain SQL over
``books."references"`` / ``books.referenced_by``, one indexed
``source_id in (…)`` batch per hop, no edge table. Nodes carry
``distance`` (hops from the seed); edges are CANONICAL (``from`` cites
``to``) in every direction and carry the relation kinds the row claims.
Traversed edges only (distances < hops); ``truncated`` names a walk a cap
stopped early (``graph.WALK_NODE_CAP`` / ``WALK_EDGE_CAP``, measured
bounds — the worst live two-hop closure is 856 nodes). Metadata only —
never spends search credits. 404 when the seed is not in the corpus.
